I’ve been a woodworker for years (my dad has a nice shop), but recently decided to set up a shop of my own in my 12 x 24 garage, which I’m sharing with yard tools, bikes, and camping gear. So far I have a table saw and a planer, a few smaller hand-held power tools, and a few hand tools–it’s a good start (and there’s not a lot of space for much more). I like the window next to the workbench, and even though there’s no heat or A/C, I love to be in there.

THE BEST WAY TO GLUE DOWELS
When doweling pieces together, sand a small flat on one side of each dowel before inserting them. This allows any excess glue to escape when you clamp the joint. If you dont let the glue escape, the pressure could force the joint open again.

another banjo 4

will ... showin us how it sounds ...
my son will has finished his fourth banjo.  hes an excellent player, so hes experimenting with different wood combinations, and detail tweaking, looking for that elusive perfect sound that he knows is oout there.  this one sounds pretty good.  the half fretless thing allows the player to slide notes from one to the other, giving the banjo an interesting, different kind of sound.  there is a short audio/video here and larger photos and more discriptive text on my dorset cstom furniture blog as well as links to construction details and wills banjo website.
wills a great furniture maker but i can see the passion really rise when the banjo stuff comes out.

Excellent Polyurethane Application

Discarded pantyhose or nylon stockings make an excellent application for urethane or polyurethane finished, particularly on contoured surfaces or turnings. Just wad them up, dip the ball in the finish, and wipe it on. You get a nice, smooth, thin coat that dries fast and has few if any bubbles.

Aging Wood Artificially
As wood ages, the surfaces that are exposed to light and air tend to grow darker. (Only walnut and mahogany grow lighter.) This phenomenon helps to give antique furniture its lustrous patina. When making reproduction of antiques, you can create an artificial patina by applying a 10-percent solution of nitric acid (available from most chemical-supply companies). Let the acid soak into the surface of the new wood for several minutes, then warm it with a heat gun. As the temperature of the surface climbs, the wood will suddenly turn dark. Continue to apply heat until the wood surface is dried thoroughly. When applying the acid, be sure to wear rubber gloves and a full face shield. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated room.

Installing Drawer Fronts

On European-style cabinets and other pieces with separate drawer fronts, install the doors and drawer boxes first. Then, once the doors are adjusted properly, install the drawer fronts to match. Put double-sided carpet tape on the fronts of the drawer boxes, and position of the drawer faces. Once you have them stuck on, in the right positions, slide the drawers open and screw the faces on from inside.
